Freemasonary: Royal Alfred Lodge, No 455, Oxford, silver membership medal, [1772], unsigned, c. 1814, crowned bust of King Alfred l., DOMINUS ILLUMINATIO MEA, rev. shield of arms, SIT LUX ET LUX FUIT, 41mm. (Shackles 43; Harris 110), pierced, with suspension loop, very fine, extremely rare; Oxford, Lodge No 1, centrepiece to jewel, fretted gilt lettered border on blue glass, 48mm. (2)
Shackles lists the medal as a Foundation medal of the Alfred Lodge, No 340, Oxford, dating it to 1814. The Lodge has met continuously in and around the city since then. However the medal belong to the earlier Royal Alfred Lodge, warranted at Oxford in 1769 as No 455. The Lodge had a short life, collapsing in 1790. However, the Minute Book of the Lodge survives and records on 22 October 1772, "Bro. Treasurer laid before the Lodge a copy of the die of a Medal, which was approved of, and ordered that forty be struck for the use of the Lodge." It further notes on 6 November 1772, that "Agreed that every Master Mason shall pay lOs. 6d. for Medal; none under that degree being admitted to that distinction."

Estimate: 150 - 200 GBP
