It was Lord Zetland, as Grand Master, who ordered the foundation of the District Grand Lodge of Turkey (English Constitution), in Istanbul with, as the first Provincial Grand Master, Sir Henry Bulwer, the British Ambassador. The consecration ceremony took place on 24 June 1862, in the Embassy. The first Sovereign Commander of the Scottish Rite in Turkey, in 1864, was Prince Abdülhalim Pasha [Halim Pasha], brother of the Khedive of Egypt. The dormant Supreme Council of Turkey was revived in 1909.
