Freemasonary: Scotland, a Georgian provincial Scottish silver Master Mason's jewel, by John Leslie of Aberdeen, a skirret contained within the compasses and square, c. 1800, the string engraved as with a few further details, the plain reverse stamped ABD [Aberdeen] and IL [John Leslie], suspension loop and ring, 91 x 107.5mm., very fine and extremely rare

John Leslie (1749-1837), apprenticed to James Wildgoose as a goldsmith in October 1765 gaining his Freedom in 1774. In 1795 he was elected Master of the Trades' Hospital and then, in 1802, Deacon Convener, the highest office of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen. Throughout his career he played an active role in the life of the city and helped in establishing Aberdeen's thriving commercial life.
