London, City of Westminster, Westminster Bridge, a large pewter heart-shaped Waterman's badge engraved both sides, arms of Westminster, "J S Hawkins March 4 1789", rev. in 5 lines, "By Order of Stewards & Burgess for ye City & Liberty of Westm: to Ply at ye King's Bridge", 70 x 71.5mm., twice pierced for attachment, some porosity making it hard to read, but about very fine and very rare
The fifteen arch Westminster Bridge, designed and built by the Swiss engineer Charles Labelve (1705-1762) had been opened in 1750 by the Earl of Pembroke. The bridge was a public enterprise and therefore toll-free from the beginning, however there remained a need for Watermen and Lightermen.
