Greece. Complete medal set from the Intercalated Olympic Games of 1906 in Athens, winners, second and third prize medals (3).

These medals are often confused with the games of 1896, which were also held in Athens and share an almost identical design, with the only difference being the date.

The first winner was awarded with the gilt gold medal (graded AU58 NGC), the second with the silver (graded MS61 NGC) and the third with the bronze medal (graded MS64BN NGC).

First winner's medal is in extraordinary quality with strong details and lustre, some natural areas of discolouration on the obverse which do not detract from its overall appearance. The second prize medal is in magnificent condition with old cabinet silver-grey patina and sharp details. Finally, the third prize medal is in unsurpassed quality with a rich milk chocolate patina and very sharp details.

All examples are very rare and missing from many Olympic collections. It is important to note that these were produced at a time when the Olympic Games were struggling to survive and the number of participants and competing sports were incomparably fewer, thus making these examples rare.

The opportunity to acquire one of the earliest sets of Olympic medals is certainly not to be missed.

Graded AU58, MS61, MS64BN NGC respectively.
