The Owen-Rooke Collection | Edward 'the Confessor' (1042-1066), 'Hammer Cross' Type, Penny, 1059-1062, Oxford, Ælfwig, + E[D]PARD RD REX, crowned and draped bust right, sceptre before, rev. + ÆLFPI : ON OXENEXFO, short voided cross with 'hammer cross' terminals, annulet at centre, 1.32g, 12h (Charles Lewis Stainer [1904], 'Oxford Silver Pennies' (925-1272), pp. 55-56, no. 3 [Pl. X, no. 26 same dies] = BMC 1126 [Chancton Farm]; Briggs [1893], 231c; Lockett I [1955], 846a; SCBI 9 [Ashmolean], 966-969, cf. 966-67 same dies; North 828; BMC XI; Spink 1182), usual die flaw to legend at 1 o'clock, otherwise pleasingly centred, lustrous and handsomely struck-up with an enriching colourful tone in recesses, about extremely fine, very rare, especially to commerce and with that delightful and distinctive Chancton Farm and Walbrook tone.
Provenance
The Owen-Rooke Collection of Oxfordshire Pennies (978-1272)
, ,
Cataloguer's Note: The beautiful toning of this coin and die duplication with examples recovered from Chancton Farm (1867) and Walbrook (1872) would immediately suggest that this coin has been recovered from one of these hoards; most probably thereafter having passed through the Briggs (1893) and Lockett (1955) cabinets, if not an undocumented one to the present day. No comparable is to be found on CoinArchives and the other five examples traced are all impounded in Museum collections
Estimate: £600 - £800
