The Owen-Rooke Collection | Henry III 'of Winchester' (1216-1272), 'Voided Longcross', Pennies, Classes 3bc, struck AD 1249, Oxford (4), including, Gefrei [Gaufridus de Stocwille], crowned bust facing, no neck, rev. GEFREI ON OXON, voided long cross, trio of pellets in angles, 12h, a touch off-struck and with peripheral softness on obverse, the mintmark given the semblance of a plain cross, lightly toned, fine; additionally, Henri [Henricus Simeon], similar, rev. hENRI ON OXON, 2h, lightly toned with softness of strike to key devices, about fine; lastly, Willem [Willelmus Sarsorius] (2), as before, rev. WILLEM ON OXON, 8h; another, as last, 10h, the second with darker 'field' tone, otherwise both on the borderline of fine; an interesting academic assemblage for this scarcer provincial mint, in use for the last time until the tumult of the English Civil War (4).
