Edward III (1327-1377), Second Coinage, .833 Fine Silver Issue, Halfpenny, struck 1335-1343, + EDWARDVS REX AN *, crowned bust facing, rev. CIVITAS *LONDON, long cross and pellets, 0.57g, 4h, 13.9-16.6mm. (Withers 2a; North 1100/1; Spink 1540), waterworn and 'field' blue-grey toning on an elliptical flan, about fine, with full PAS recording; additionally Third Coinage or 'Florin' Issues, struck 1344-1351 (2), Class I [Fox Class XVI], Penny, London, similar, more distinctive crown, annulet stops, rev. lombardic Ns, 1.26g, 12h (North 1113; Spink 1543), irregularly shorn planchet, otherwise rich dark 'field' tone, good fine if not better; another, Halfpenny, similar to first, although omits AN in legend, rev. as before, 0.71g, 8h (Withers 7; North 1131; Spink 1557), waterworn and 'field' toned, barely fine, but on a full flan; lastly, Fourth Coinage, Pre-Treaty Period, Series C, Penny, 1351-1352, London, similar, wedge-tailed R, rev. additional annulet at centre of trefoil of pellets in each angle, 0.95g, 1h (North 1149; Spink 1584), some minor edge fractures, otherwise on a full flan with 'field' tone, fine, the reverse better; a poignant academic group dating to the devastating era of the Black Death (4).
