ITALY: Vittorio Emanuele III, 1900-1946, AE medal, 1936, Cas-XIV/101, 44mm antique bronzed medal by Emilio Monti and Stabilimento Stefano Johnson for the Establishment of the Italian Empire; Ethiopian Lion of Judah pierced by arrows, broken sword and left before, MACALLE DICEMBRE 1896 // CAMPAGNA D'ETIOPIA / PROCLAMAZIONE / DELL'IMPERO / IX MAGGIO MCMXXXVI below arms of the National Fascist Party and the Kingdom of Italy, PCGS graded Specimen 67. CAC. On Saturday, May 9, 1936, the ""Italian Empire"" was established by proclamation by Benito Mussolini and in the course of this, Victor Emmanuel III, the King of Italy, assumed the title of "Emperor of Abyssinia." Fascist Italy declared the Abyssinian War victoriously over and all territories subordinated to the sovereignty of Italy.This medal was minted by the firm of Stefano Johnson in Milan. It commemorates the Italian invasion of Ethiopia by Mussolini's Fascist forces between October 1935 and May 1936. The medalist Emilio Monti was born in Milan and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera under Giannino Castiglioni, Giuseppe Graziosi, and the painter Ambrogio Alciati. As a sculptor and medal maker, he collaborated for about forty years with the Stefano Johnson company. This medal belongs to a series, all designed by Monti in 1936 to memorialize various battles during the Italian invasion in Ethiopia.
