Roman Republic
Julius Caesar and Gaius Octavius Thurinus (Octavian), Aureus, Gallia Cisalpina, c. 43 BC, Calicó 52 (R3), Cr. 490/2 (R3), Syd. 1321 (R8), 8.15 g.
Obverse: C.CAESAR.DICT. PERP.PONT.MAX. Laureate head Caesar right.
Reverse: C. CAESAR COS: PONT: AVG. Bare head of Octavius Augustus, right.
Small depression on Octavian's neck and marginal flat parts as is common in this period, but in general a superior and unusually sharply struck example of this very rare and historically important issue uniting the portrait of Caesar with that of his adopted son, Augustus.
More than anyone before him, Augustus knew how to make use of coinage as propaganda, of which this is an excellent example, since it reinforces the claim that Octavian - not Antony - was the rightful heir of Caesar.
