Roman Empire
Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD, Aureus, Lugdunum, 8-6 BC, Calicó 174, RIC 198, C 39, 7.78 g. - scarce
Obverse: AVGVSTVS DIVI F. Laureate head of Augustus right
Reverse: C.CAES AVGVS.F. Gaius Caesar galloping right, holding sword and shield; legionary aquila between two standards in background.
As Rome's first emperor, Augustus based his powers on traditional political offices and presented himself as the "first man" of the Senate rather than as a king, cleverly preserving the ideals of the Roman Republic.
