Roman Empire
Marcus Cocceius Nerva, 96 – 98 AD, Aureus, Rome, 96 AD, Calicó 957, RIC 3, C 24, 7.54 g.
Obverse: IMP NERVA CAES. AVG. P. M. TR. P. COS. II .P.P. Laureate head right.
Reverse: CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM. Clasped hands holding legionary aquila set on prow.
Extremely fine and rare, with a fine portrait echoing the contemporary Roman historian, Suetonius who describes Nerva as "handsome, with a large nose".
Nerva who had held public offices under both Nero and Vespasian was, with his quiet lifestyle and kindly disposition, an unusual emperor, more fond of poetry than of crushing his enemies.
