Publius Helvius Pertinax, 1st January – 28th March 193 AD, Aureus, Rome, 193 AD, Calicó 2379a, RIC 1b, C 3, 7.10 g.
Obverse: IMP. CAES. P. HELV. PERTIN. AVG. Laureate head right.
Reverse: AEQVIT. AVG. TR. P. COS. II. Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia.
Very rare, extremely fine and with a bold portrait of excellent style.
Pertinax, whom Cassius Dio described as "an excellent and upright man" was in modern terms a "self-made man". The son of a freedman, he distinguished himself both as a politician and as an officer. However, following the death of Commodus his many wise reforms ended in a conflict with the Praetorian Guard who had him assassinated after only three short months wearing the purple.
