Roman Empire
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Caracalla, 198-217 AD, Aureus, Rome, 203 AD, Calicó 2795 (R2), RIC 70a (R2), C 500, 7.12 g.
Obverse: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG. Laureate bust right, with aegis.
Reverse: PONT. TR. P. VI. COS. Caracalla standing left, holding Victory and sceptre, crowned by Virtus standing, holding spear.
An exceptionally beautiful and lustrous example of this very rare type.
Caracalla was with little doubt a cruel tyrant exemplified by his orders to have his younger brother, Geta, assassinated, and his reign was dominated by instability, invasions by the Germanic peoples and war with the Parthians. However, he should also be remembered for the "Constitutio Antoniniana", granting Roman citizenship to all free men throughout the Roman Empire, as well as for the "Thermae Antoninianae" (Baths of Caracalla).
