Roman Empire
Marcus Opellius Severus Macrinus, 217-218 AD, Aureus, Rome, late July 217-early March 218 AD, Calicó 2944 (R2), RIC 74, 7.22 g.
Obverse: IMP. C.M.OPEL SEV. MACRINVS AVG. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: IOVI CONSERVATORI. Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt in his right hand, cloak over left arm.
Light edge scrape, otherwise extremely fine and very rare.
Born in Mauretania c. 164 AD, Macrinus was the first emperor who rose to power without first having achieved senatorial status. He was in all probability the driving force behind the murder of Caracalla and was proclaimed emperor only three days after. Following a short reign marred by unsuccessful campaigns against the Parthian, he was captured and executed by the army of Elagabalus.
