Roman Empire
Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander, 222-235 AD, Aureus, Rome, 233 AD, Calicó 3070 (R1), RIC 242, C 141, 6.66 g
Obverse: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG. Bust of Severus Alexander, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right.
Reverse: LIBERALITAS AVG. V. Liberalitas standing left, holding tessera and cornucopiae.
Very rare and struck on a large flan.
Alexander, who achieved the purple at the young age of 14, is in general remembered as a great emperor. Much of his reign was, however, controlled by his mother Julia Mammae, whereas he himself was a weak individual. Both he and his mother were killed by his own troops following Alexander's decision to try to buy off the Germanic tribes, dishonoring him in the eyes of the legionaries.
