ASIA MINOR, Uncertain mint. 2nd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (31mm, 16.91 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; trident head left in left field. CNG E-72, lot 7; NAC 51, lot 599; otherwise unpublished. Good VF, die shift on obverse.

Symbols on Alexander type issues from this late period are typically recognizable civic types, such as the rose on Rhodian issues. A trident head is only known on contemporary issues of Mylasa (Price 2494–6), but the trident is always "ornate", unlike the plain style of the symbol here. The style of the reverses of these Mylasa coins are also quite different in general from the present piece.
