Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AV Aureus (20mm, 4.69 g, 12h). Indian imitation. IVIVII IVAZΠO, laureate head right / TVZAΠ CVETO, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt(?) in extended right hand, scepter in left; to left below, eagle standing left, head right. Cf. Triton X, lot 667 and CNG 69, lot 1655 for similar types; for prototype: cf. RIC IV 196; cf. Calicó 2508; cf. BMCRE 469. Fine, two holes as usual, minor deposits in the devices.
There are two general types of Indian imitations of Severan aurei: those with legends that closely mimic the original prototypes, and those that are nonsensical, like the present example.
