Ancients
JUDAEA. The Jewish War (AD 66-70). AR half-shekel (20mm, 6.92 gm, 9h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 3/5. Jerusalem, dated Year 1 (May (or later) AD 66-March AD 67). Half of a shekel (Paleo-Hebrew), omer cup with smooth rim, pearl on either side of bowl, flat base with pearled ends; Year 1 above / Jerusalem the Holy (Paleo-Hebrew), staff with three pomegranate buds, globular base. GBC 6, 6384. Solidly struck on bright flan with silhouette toning.

When the Jews of Israel began striking coins in silver, these coins were mainly shekels of about 13-14 grams weight, along with half-shekels weighing 6.8 grams, and a tiny handful of silver quarter-shekels. For some unknown reason, half-shekels are considerably rarer than full shekels.
