Julius Caesar, as Dictator for the Fourth Time and Consul for the Fifth Time (44 BC). AV aureus (21mm, 8.01 gm, 10h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 4/5. Rome. CAES DIC-QVAR, diademed bust of Venus right, wearing pendant earring / COS•QVINC, legend within wreath. Calicó 42a (same obverse die). Crawford 481/1. Sydenham 1021. Iulia 30. Well-centered strike with bright devices on one of the last coins minted under Julius Caesar.

Julius Caesar used the Roman founding myth, memorialized in the Aeneid by Virgil, to link his lineage to Iulus, the son of Aeneas, and grandson of Venus. Thereby, laying claim to the goddess Venus over his opponent at the time, Pompey the Great.
