Constans, as Augustus (AD 337-350). AV 4-1/2 solidi (40mm (45mm with suspension), 21.08 gm, 6h). NGC (photo-certificate) AU 5/5 - 1/5, wrinkled, scuffs, mounted. Siscia, 2nd group, spring AD 340-19 January AD 350. CONSTANS-AVGVSTVS, laurel and rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Constans right, seen from front; all within wreath border / VICTORIAE D D N N AVGG, two Victories standing facing, heads turned inward, holding between them a wreath inscribed VOT / X / MVL / XX in four lines; palm SIS palm in exergue, all within wreath border terminating in large star at 12h. RIC VIII -. Depeyrot -. Magnificent in hand with golden-rod luster rippling across this historic piece.

This is the companion piece to RIC VIII 128 - Constantius II medallion of 4.5 solidi (20.17 gm) and was hitherto unknown, filling in a historical gap of published co-issued medallions. It is also a companion to a previous medallion we sold of the same type but different dies (Auction 3075, 15 August 2019, lot 32073, realized $156,000).
