Maria Theresa gold 5 Ducat 1761 AU Details (Mount Removed, Repaired) NGC, Vienna mint, cf. Fri-402 (for type), SCWC-Unl. An enormously rare type of which we have previously handled one example in 2006 when we sold an XF40 piece for $3,450. The obverse admits a plethora of fine wisps across the field, whereas the reverse faces up with much remaining originality and a pleasing shimmer complimenting the crisply executed Holy Roman Coat of Arms. Presumably modified from a 1758 reverse die, as evidence of underlying 5 and 8 can be readily distinguished in the date.
