Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838 QUITO-MV AU55 NGC, Quito mint, KM23.1 (Rare), Fr-3. Among the great rarities of Ecuadorian origin and the first date of this exceedingly elusive type; only the second of this denomination we have handled. A laudably bold striking is immediately evident and consistent with what one might expect from an even finer assignment. Each detail remains fully articulated, from the stippling of the mountainscape to the facial features of the instantly recognizable sun motif. The honey surfaces have mellowed, developing stunning amber and mulberry silhouettes throughout. Only minimal highpoint rub to the sitter's jaw and mountains defines the grade but ultimately do little to detract from the advanced aesthetic caliber. An absolute rarity in the eyes of collectors and the first of this date and assayer combination to come to market since the Eliasberg specimen, a lesser example designated XF40 by NGC that brought $27,600 in 2005. Here we have the finest of three current occupants between both grading services by 15 grade-points. With examples bearing the ST assayer initials auctioned far more frequently, three times since Eliasberg, this makes for a rare opportunity for collectors and will doubtlessly by met with strong bidder enthusiasm.
