Münster. Ferdinand von Bayern 2 Taler 1647-EK MS62+ NGC, Münster mint, KM18 (Rare), Dav-5592. 57.71gm. An unimaginable rarity from the multiple-Taler series of not only Münster, but across all German States issues, realizing incredible sums when examples of the same Davenport reference number come to market. In fact, surveying auction records from the last two decades reveals no instance of a 1647-dated 2 or 3 Taler, while the only examples of this type to appear were dated 1638 and of a slightly modified obverse, of which there were six, with none appearing in the prominent Virgil Brand, Cape Coral, or Köhlmoos collections. The selection on offer here, certified at the cusp of a seemingly deserving Choice Mint State assignment, broadcasts its impeccable strike full in both its quality and the impact of its expression. Perfect centering and a light peripheral tone laden with amber, seafoam, and cobalt punctuate the slate expanses, and endures as a clear result of long-term storage by an advanced collector.
