George IV gold 2 Pounds 1823 MS65 NGC, KM690, S-3798, Marsh-T6. A one-year type and the first ever year of the 2 Pounds denomination. Owing to the fierce drama at the Royal Mint, it was the Assistant Engraver Jean (Johann) Baptiste Merlen who engraved George IV's effigy using Chanterey's bust of the King, following the feisty Chief Engraver Pistrucci's refusal to work from a "non-life" model. The original mintage is not known and today, these pieces occur frequently as removed from jewelry, cleaned, or otherwise abused over the past two centuries. Not so with this magnificent Gem offering which, spare for a few rather inconsequential wisps, projects nearly unblemished surfaces and astounding luminosity. The raised motifs showcase a light touch of golden frost, all resulting to an entirely pleasing visual constellation. Certainly a piece fit to an ambitious collection of modern British Sovereigns.
