Groningen. City silver "St. Jans" Rijksdaalder 1598 AU53 NGC, Groningen mint, Dav-8879, Delm-731 (R4), PW-Gr02. 28.68gm. In the name of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Empire (1576-1612). A magnificent representative of this early type imbued with elephant gray patination covering the surfaces. Well-centered with fully legible legends and magnificently preserved characteristics, and certainly a well-informed pick from the celebrated Brand Collection. We could not locate a single comparable specimen auctioned in the last 20 years and, in fact, the present selection was last offered as being only the second example known.
Ex. Jean Elsen Auction 89 (September 2006, lot 84); Brand Collection (Sotheby's May 1984, Part 6, Lot 489) From the Coenen Collection
