Leon. Provisional "Imitation Cob" 4 Reales 1823 PM-PY AU55 NGC, Provincia Yoro mint, KM16.1 (under Honduras). Lions facing left variety. 13.07gm. For those familiar with these imitation Cobs, this is a coin that shouldn't be. From an issue which is frequently encountered holed, clipped and/or heavily circulated, the present offering is a true survivor. Virtually free of circulation wear, the old dove patina with olive nuances gives it depth as in the moss encountered in old pre-Columbian ruins. The strike was balanced and well-centered, rendering the devices to their fullest. An impressive representative of this scarce denomination, by far the finest imitation Cob handled by us, likely to engage advanced Spanish Colonial type collectors.
