Frederick III gold 1/2 Ducat ND (c. 1669) UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Christiania mint, KM81 (Rare), ABH-7 (R). Armored, Roman style bust of Frederic III facing right. Possibly cleaned at some point in history as areas of light hairlines are visible under magnification, nonetheless, the King's effigy is remarkably expressive and imposing, with mint brilliance teeming in the legends. The reverse is delightful and exhibits even localized glossiness on the antiqued gold surfaces, with a touch of adjustment marks on the rampant lion.
Frederick III expressed great interest in his coinage and this affinity led to founding of the Royal Coin Cabinet in Copenhagen. According to Brekke, in Norway these gold trade coins were of no importance as a medium of exchange due to them being far too rare to begin with - and in fact, today they are regarded among the rarest gold series in the world.
