Christian V silver 1/4 Speciedaler ND (1685) XF45 NGC, KM-A107.2 (Rare), ABH-162 (XR). An exceedingly rare piece, issued to commemorate the Royal visit to Norway in 1685. Carrying beautiful elephant gray patination and even wear on both facets, with evidence of a cracked die traversing right down the middle of the reverse. The reverse text referred to as TERPAMARI in Krause therefore might be intended to read TERRA MARI Ø (translates to 'land of the sea' in Latin, the 'ø' translates to 'an island' in Scandinavian languages). Regardless if this is a valid assumption or not, an intriguing offering, and our research has not located any previous sales records since we last sold this very coin in 2014.

Throughout his reign, Christian V spent a lot of time on physical displays and parties. He participated as a fiery cavalry officer during the Scanian War, but was devoid of tactical leadership skills. His riding skills, as depicted on this coin, came into their own during the long trip to Norway in 1685. His sporting activities eventually became his demise when he was injured during a deer-hunt, never regained his prowess and died the following year of the accident in 1699 aged 53.
