Christian V gold 2 Ducats ND (1670-1699) VF Details (Damage) PCGS, Christiania mint, KM120 (3 known), ABH-11 (R), Hede-11. A formidable rarity from the already difficult Norwegian gold series, where any issue of Christian V is considered a veritable highlight regardless of its state of preservation. Among these, the current representative is arguable among the most elusive as confirmed by a sheer paucity in recent auction records. In fact, the last example seen was this very coin in our 2014 offering of the Newman collection, where it garnered interest past $70,000, with no others appearing since. A diminutive coin in stature, struck upon a surprisingly thick, sun-gold planchet boasting the proud bust of beloved monarch Christian V and a crowned lion. Despite its worn detail and conditional qualifier, the importance of the offering at hand remains undiminished, with only those struck under Frederik III ranking higher in rarity. With this in mind, we expect fervent interest consistent with other Norwegian rarities in this very auction.

Throughout the reigns of Frederik III and Christian V, the majority of commerce was facilitated by copper and silver specie, with gold seemingly of no practical use due to its general scarcity to the region. According to Norges Mynter, in 1665, businessmen in Christiana petitioned the king to authorize the minting of a small amount of gold coinage, where 150 Ducats worth were struck. This trend of small and unsuccessful mintages of gold coins continued through Christian V's reign, and any piece from this era endures especially coveted by the Norwegian collector.
