Sancho I gold Morabitino (180 Dinheiros) ND (1185-1211) MS63 NGC, Coimbra mint, Fr-1, Gomes-04.03. +SΛNCIVS EX RTVGΛLIS *, crowned, armored figure of Sancho on horseback riding right, sword raised in right hand, cross-tipped scepter held in left / +IN NE PTRIS I LIIII SPS SCIA, five escutcheons arranged in the shape of a cross, seven-pointed stars in angles. A celebrated early Portuguese issue, and one which, like the contemporary Morabitinos of Alfonso VIII of Castile, derived their fineness and weight standard of the Almoravids, who had been pushed out of Spain by the Almohads in 1170. Carrying the famous quinas motif of 5 stacked shields on the reverse that would become the standard arms of the Portuguese monarchy, this Choice survivor delivers a time-travelling experience to the spectator straight to the middle ages. Most likely as fine as when struck, the razor-sharp motifs lack any circulation wear, with the expert strike rendering this piece to its fullest. A candidate for advanced Portuguese coin cabinets and any connoisseur of a pristine rarity.
