Julius Caesar, as Dictator (49-44 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.85 gm, 1h). NGC AU★ 5/5 - 4/5. Military mint traveling with Caesar in Greece, Apollonia, July 48 BC. Female head (Venus?) right, wearing pendant earring, necklace, stephane and oak wreath, hair bound in jeweled chignon at back of head; LII (Caesar's age=52) behind / CAE-SAR, trophy of Gallic arms and armor, with horned helmet, chainmail shirt, shield, and carnyx; securis left at right. Crawford 452/2. Sydenham 1009. Julia 26. An attractively deep patina with hints of Prussian blue throughout the obverse and a brighter khaki highlighting the reverse. Absolutely gorgeous in hand.
The LII=52 on obverse apparently indicates Caesar's age, thus struck after Caesar's fifty-second birthday on 13 July 48 BC.
