South Peru. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1837-BA AU55 NGC, Cuzco mint, KM167. The first gold type issued by the short-lived state of South Peru and thus a true relic of the tumultuous period following the Latin American revolutions. Old-gold surfaces encase the skillfully rendered motifs that feature the popular "sunface" design. While not quite meriting a Mint State designation, this example offers collectors an opportunity to obtain an heirloom piece at a fraction of the cost.
