Republic "Montevideo Siege" Peso 1844 MS62 PCGS, Montevideo mint, KM5, Elizondo-1, Lezama-Plate IV, Almeida-032 (R1). Coin alignment. A one-year emission struck to total mintage of 1,500 pieces across all varieties, these famed Uruguayan crowns were produced over the course of only two days at the reopened Casa de Moneda in Montevideo after the long civil war and city siege by General Oribe. The mint's limited technical capabilities, together with the natural emergency nature of the denomination, led to few escaping use in circulation, with many otherwise cleaned. This near-Choice specimen stands apart with an earthen patina that glints from underlying bloom, its devices impressively rendered considering the duress of its production.
