THRACE, Hadrianopolis. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ Tetrassarion (26.5mm, 9.12 g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Tyche seated left on rock, holding ears of grain and cornucopia; at her feet, river-god Tonzus swimming. Cf. Jurukova, Hadrianopolis 517 (V260/R503); RPC VII.2 750; Varbanov –. Earthen brown patina, clashed die on obverse, flan flaw on reverse. Near VF.
From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection.
This die was known to Jurukova and was used with several other reverse types but this combination was unknown to her; however, the majority of the specimens recorded in RPC are from this die pair.
