CELTIC, Durotriges. Uninscribed. Circa 65-20 BC. BI Stater (19mm, 5.36 g). Cranborn Chase type (Durotrigan E). Devolved head of Apollo right / Disjointed horse left; pellets above, pellet below, pellet in lozenge above tail, [zigzag and pellet pattern between two parallel exergue lines]. ABC 2157; Van Arsdell 1235-1; SCBC 366. Toned. Good VF. Obverse neatly cut for cancellation(?).

From the Trehearne Collection.

A number of Carnborn Chase type staters have been found bearing dramatic cuts on the obverse, a feature rarely seen on other ancient British coins. These appear to be some form of cancellation mark, indicating that the coins were to be withdrawn from circulation, either for restriking or some ritual function. For more information, see: Ghey, Eleanor and John Talbot, "An Iron Age Coin Hoard from Nursling, Hampshire," in BNJ 92 (2022).
