Rome, Jacob Cornelisz Cobaert (fl. 1568-1610), after a design by Guglielmo della Porta, A Bacchanalian Feast, bronze oval plaque, on the edge of woodland the drunken Bacchus is brought in on the back of a donkey to a table at which sit cavorting fauns and bacchantes; on the lower right is a reclining river god, 133.5 x 234mm (Planiscig (1919), 400; cf. Bange 10), pierced, an extremely fine early cast with dark patina Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 168 in red on reverse]; ex Galerie Denis Dervieux, Paris. This forms part of a set of mythological scenes based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. An example of this plaque is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
