North Italy or Germany (2nd half of 15th century), The Lamentation with Instruments of Christ's Passion, bronze-gilt pax, the Virgin supporting the body of Christ at the foot of the cross, flanked by Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene and with instruments of the Passion on and around the cross; within an integral architectural frame with ornate columns and the entablature incised IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI, 172 x 130mm (Avery, Collection L (1985), 12; cf. Bange (1923) pl. 2, 1931 = Weber 12 without the framework), the reverse stand mostly lacking, some wear to the gilding, very fine and an early cast Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 150 in red and earlier collectors' numbers 1127, 130 and 51 on the reverse]; ex Sotheby's Paris, 22 October 2008, lot 5 part. The instruments of the Passion include Judas's betrayal of Christ, the washing of the hands, the Holy Sponge, the crowing rooster, three dice and Christ's tunic and a representation of the 30 pieces of silver.
