North Germany, Mecklenburg (second quarter of 16th century), Mars and Venus or Adam and Eve, bronze-gilt plaquette, the two figures standing to front, arm in arm, she holding a covered goblet and he with his hand on her breast, a cuirass held by two putti at his feet; on the right, the arms of the Mecklenburg family of Hahn; the whole with scroll work around with traces of an inscription "Verbum domini manet in aeternum", 81mm (Weber 228 = Bange (1923) 1469; Kress 441, fig. 449), very fine contemporary cast, pierced at the four cardinal points, with some casting faults at the edge and slight wear to the gilding, the reverse incised with EDME followed by Sc? Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 200 in red on reverse]; ex collection of Les Dillée, Sotheby's, Paris, 18 March 2015, lot 179. The female figure is copied from a print of Venus by Heinrich Aldegrever dated 1533 and the cuirass links the male figure to Mars but the inscription is obviously biblical making a precise identification of the scene uncertain.

Estimate: 1500 - 2000 GBP
