Netherlandish, follower of Paulus van Vianen (17th century), Mercury with the head of Argos, oval bronze plaquette, full length figure of Mercury facing, holding the severed head of Argos and a sword, standing on stony ground with Io as a heifer grazing on the right, 150 x 108mm (Warren, Ashmolean, 480; cf. The scene involves the unfaithfulness of Jupiter who had fallen in love with Io. Jupiter's wife Juno upon hearing this turned Io into a white heifer and placed the animal under the guard of the giant Argos. Jupiter sent Mercury to kill Argos by lulling him to sleep with music and then decapitating him.
