French or Flemish (early 17th century), a fine pair of oval bronze plaques, comprising (i) The Martyrdom of St Stephen, the saint being stoned to death whilst gazing upwards to witness the vision of Jesus seated at the right hand of the Father in the clouds above and Jerusalem in the background, 158 x 218mm (Weber -); and (ii) The Conversion of St Paul, Paul helped from the ground having fallen from his horse, his left arm raised towards the vision of God in a radiant cloud above; elsewhere are soldiers on horseback in disarray and a foot-soldier with his arms clasped over his head, 162 x 212mm (Weber 1033; Molinari 417), extremely fine contemporary casts and with uniform brown patinas, the second pierced at top edge (2) Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [each with inventory number 1 in red on their reverses]. According to the inventory number these must have been M. Edrei's first plaquette purchases but unfortunately there is no record of their earlier provenance. The patina on both is lighter towards the edges suggesting they were in frames. St. Paul, then as Saul and a great persecutor of Christians, witnessed the stoning of St Stephen before his conversion on the road to Damascus.

Estimate: 5000 - 7000 GBP
