France, The Battle of Rocroi (1643), large bronze plaque, the Duke of Enghien on horseback gesturing with his baton to cavalrymen and foot-soldiers dressed as Gallic warriors; on the right, a cavalryman carries the French banner; in the background beyond tents is the engagement before the fortified town of Rocroi in the distance, 180 x 265mm, pierced at top and black toned, extremely fine and contemporary Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris {inventory number 117 in red on the reverse]. The Battle of Rocroi on 19 May 1643, just after the accession of the four-year-old Louis XIV, marked a major turning point for France in their involvement in The Thirty Years' War. The 21 year old Duke of Enghein, sent to relieve Rocroi in north-west France, soundly defeated the forces of General Francisco de Melo and the outcome was hailed as a great victory and a good omen for the new king's reign.
