After the Antique (2nd half of 15th century), Antiope abducted by Theseus, bronze plaquette, Antiope as the central figure held on either side by a soldier while two ships in the foreground are loaded: the stern of the ship on the left with two Amazons on board while the prow of the other ship is loaded by two men and on the right presumably stands the figure of Theseus, 42 x 43.5mm, pierced, a very fine contemporary cast evidently taken from a cracked ancient intaglio, apparently unrecorded Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [reverse marked in white PA and 62, uncertain number in red]; ex Larminet-Davioud collection, Pierre Bergé, Paris, 27 January 2021, lot 156. The scene is described by Robert Graves in The Greek Myths: Others say that Theseus visited their [the Amazons'] country some years later, in the company of Peirithous and his comrades; and that the Amazons, delighted at the arrival of so many handsome warriors, offered them no violence. Antiope came to greet Theseus with gifts, but she had hardly climbed aboard his ship, before he weighed anchor and abducted her. Subsequently Theseus married Antiope but abandoned her in favour of Phaedra. Antiope who according to Ovid was pregnant, threatened to kill every person who attended their wedding and for that was killed by Theseus.

Estimate: 800 - 1200 GBP
