Manner of Moderno, The Battle of Cannae, bronze plaquette, a battle scene of nude warriors fighting on foot and horseback outside city walls, 53mm (Molinier 637; Kress 93, fig. 233 reverse (as Master of Coriolanus); Scaglia V.27, variant A (as Moderno); Hill, Corpus, 1162, obverse), very fine contemporary cast Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [Inventory number 39 in red on reverse]. The inscription CONSALVI AGIDARI VICTORIA shows the plaquette to refer to the Italian victories of the Great Captain Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, comparing them to the Battle of Cannae when Hannibal crushingly defeated the Romans in 216 BC in the 2nd Punic War. The design copies the small rectangular plaquettes of Coriolanus in Battle given to the Master of Coriolanus (see lot 11).

Estimate: 400 - 600 GBP
