Rome (3rd quarter of the 15th century), Five Putti at Play, rectangular bronze plaquette, the central putto holding a mask to another who has fallen over and is supported by a third; on the right are two further putti, 48.5 x 88mm (Molinier 79; Bange 299; Kress 361, fig. 303; Scaglia II.4; Warren, Ashmolean, 376), somewhat rough contemporary cast, scratches on reverse with edges chamfered Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 32 in red on reverse]. The Roman attribution is certain as an incuse matrix for casting these well-known plaquettes was discovered in the foundations of a wall in Pope Paul II's Palazzo di Venezia in Rome which contained its own bronze foundry. Some examples form the components of three-sided inkwells, hence the chamfered edges found on most examples and as here.

Estimate: 500 - 700 GBP
