From the collection of a Polish connoisseur of Probus coins;
Ex Philippe Gysen collection, Paul-Francis Jacquier, Auction 46, 20 September 2019, lot 550;
Reportedly purchased from Athina in September 1998.
This coin is noteworthy on two accounts: first, it has an obverse legend without 'C' (for Caesar) before M (Marcus) and AVR (Aurelius), a rarer variety of obverse legend. Second, the reverse type "VIR-2" is distinguished by Philippe Gysen as much rarer than the common type "VIR-1" which has an exergual line and the enemy kneeling rather than fallen before the horse (see P. Gysen, 'Nouvelles données concernant l'atelier de Serdica sous le règne de Probus' in RBN CXLVI, pp. 15-29 (2000)).
