Probus BI Antoninianus. Cyzicus, AD 280. IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, radiate and mantled bust to left, holding eagle-tipped sceptre / SOLI INVICTO, Sol in spread quadriga, holding whip; C M below, XXIT underneath. RIC V.2 911; probuscoins.fr 3145. 3.91g, 23mm, 12h.

Extremely Fine; flan crack, lustrous metal.

From the collection of a Polish connoisseur of Probus coins.

Sol's presence on coinage experience a revival under Probus after falling out of favour after Aurelian's death in 275. Probus used a variety of Sol reverse types but this facing quadriga type is exceptional for its artistry.
