From the collection of a Polish connoisseur of Probus coins;
Ex Philippe Gysen collection, Paul-Francis Jacquier, Auction 45, 14 September 2018, lot 1735.

Christophe Oliva argues that the use of the Gorgoneion on the shield carried a similar power as when it appears as part of the military apparel on a bust but that it might also have special significance to Probus whose tutelary deity was Sol to whom the gorgoneion was linked since the time of Gallienus (cf. C. Oliva, 'Répertoire général des types de boucliers employés dans la représentation des bustes militaires du monnayage de Probus. (276 - 282 Ap. J.- C.)', Revista Numismática OMNI, no. 3, (2011), p. 27).
