The Kingdom of Naples became a French client state following a French invasion after the Bourbon Ferdinand IV & VII of Naples and Sicily sided against Napoleon in the War of the Third Coalition. Joachim Murat was the brother-in-law of Napoleon and was named 'King of Naples and Sicily' in 1808, however, the French never actually gained control of Sicily as Ferdinand had fled there and continued to rule the Kingdom of Sicily.
