Cilicia or Cyprus, uncertain mint AR Stater. Circa 450-425 BC. Ram walking to left / Club and branch in saltire within pelleted square border; all in shallow incuse square. H. Troxell & N.Waggoner, The Robert F. Kelley Bequest, ANSMN 23 (1978), 43 (ANS) & pl 5.D (Oxford), (both struck from same dies). 10.83g, 22mm, 6h.

Very Fine; struck from a worn obv. die, banker's mark on ram. Of the highest rarity.

The present coin is part of a series of three types that all utilised the same obverse die coupled with three different and interesting reverses. When Troxell and Waggoner published their study of the Robert F. Kelley Bequest (ANSMN 23) in 1978 they were aware of only 10 extant examples of all three types; this number has grown exponentially in recent years with large numbers of the final type of the series (showing the "branch and berries" reverse, cf. Roma E-52, 364 & CNG E-427, 275) passing through the trade, but only one example of each of the two earlier types (Nomos 20, 249 showing the dolphin reverse, and the present coin showing the club and branch).
